Sounds Around Us

What to do:

  1. Tape record distinct sounds, using more familiar sounds for younger children and challenging sounds for older children.
  2. Play back the sounds and then have children paint, draw, or model in clay what they think the sound is or reminds them of.

Variation:

For younger children, record such sounds as:

Bell ringing Vacuum cleaner in operation
Animal sounds Toast popping out of the toaster
Clock ticking Telephone ringing
Baby crying Water running
Ball bouncing

For older children, record such sounds as:

Tape pulling off a dispenser Someone striking a match
Someone walking on leaves Coins dropping
Refrigerator door closing
Someone striking a computer keyboard or a printer running

Use your imagination!
