Scoop it Up

What to do:

  1. Place child in a safe highchair or at a table.
  2. Provide child with a fork and/or spoon and food that can easily be maneuvered with the utensils – custard-style yogurt works well, applesauce, noodles, soft-cooked carrots, bananas, cottage cheese, macaroni, cheese cubes, etc.
  3. Allow for lots of messes – on the floor, a wall, the child, etc. It takes a lot of practice to become a ‘clean” eater.
  4. Big scoops for sensory bins or sandboxes can also help children work on these skills.
  5. Learning to move and control objects is a beginning step to writing!

Children have fun practicing those fine motor skills.
