Digging for Worms

What to do:

  1. Read a book about earthworms or get a science book with illustrations of worms.
  2. Help children dig up soil to find worms with small shovels.
  3. Worms may be put in a container with a small amount of soil and moist leaves.
  4. If you keep worms for a few days, dampen the soil with water occasionally.
    Avoid too much water.
  5. Let the worms return to moist (not wet) soil so children can observe them burrowing back into the soil.

Variations:

  • If you have trouble locating earthworms, try dampening the ground and then covering with plastic or tarp. Keep covered for a week, then look for worms again. You may need to dig the ground several weeks in advance to make it soft enough for younger children.
