Digging for Worms
What to do:
- Read a book about earthworms or get a science book with illustrations of worms.
- Help children dig up soil to find worms with small shovels.
- Worms may be put in a container with a small amount of soil and moist leaves.
- If you keep worms for a few days, dampen the soil with water occasionally.
Avoid too much water. - Let the worms return to moist (not wet) soil so children can observe them burrowing back into the soil.
Variations:
- If you have trouble locating earthworms, try dampening the ground and then covering with plastic or tarp. Keep covered for a week, then look for worms again. You may need to dig the ground several weeks in advance to make it soft enough for younger children.
